The Leather Working Group

IC Group is a member of the Leather Working Group, together with brands like Timberland, H&M, and Ecco, in order to find feasible solutions on the challenges in the leather supply chain.

There is no doubt that leather production is a high risk area which has our full focus. Harmful chemicals used in tanneries preparing raw leather potentially harm both workers and the surroundings. Also the traceability of leather is difficult, but a necessary step in order to improve the sustainability of the leather supply chain.

We are working hard on reducing our leather supplier base and are regularly visiting our nominated leather suppliers. But these efforts cannot stand alone. We believe that a membership of the Leather Working Group will help us create a more transparent leather supply chain. We are working with our suppliers to ensure that they will approach their tanneries and urge them to become members of the Leather Working Group. The membership will, after training and audits, result in a grading system according to the level of compliance. Furthermore and importantly we will be able to rate the traceability of the skin used for our products.

Our membership of the Leather Working Group is another step in our quest to find solutions and through cooperation to achieve industry leverage. Our memberships of Sustainable Apparel Coalition, the Danish Ethical Trading Initiative, Better Cotton Initiative, the Business Social Compliance Initiative and Kemikaliegruppen are examples of this work, which we believe to be of utmost importance.

The Leather Working Group:

The objective of this multi-stakeholder group is to develop and maintain a protocol that assesses the compliance and environmental performance of tanneries and promotes sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices within the leather industry. The group seeks to improve the tanning industry by creating alignment on environmental priorities, bringing visibility to best practices and providing suggested guidelines for continuous improvement. It is the group’s objective to work transparently, involving brands, suppliers, retailers, leading technical experts within the leather industry, NGOs and other stakeholder organizations.
